Important colored diamonds

What is Fancy?

  • The term Fancy was coined by the GIA to distinguish Natural Colored Diamonds which exhibit a noticeable color when the diamond is viewed “face-up."

  • Only one out of 10,000 naturally produced diamonds possesses enough color to be classified as a Fancy Color Diamond.

  • The GIA’s color grading system for Fancy Color Diamonds designates the amount of color saturation as Fancy, Fancy Light, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep and Fancy Vivid, Fancy being the least saturated and Fancy Vivid being the most.

  • The more color a Fancy Color Diamond has, the more valuable it is. With white or colorless diamonds the inverse is true: the less color a white diamond has the higher its value.
